What is the course about?
You will learn the basic skills needed to paint from observation and develop confidence in using oil paint, as suggested by the tutor.
What will we cover?
We will cover paint and how it works in relation to tone, colour, method and technique. The course incorporates basic colour mixing and develops experience in paint handling in relation to painting from observation. You will be encouraged to try a variety of techniques used by different artists, whose work will be used as examples.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- use paint to describe the basics of tonal structure
- explore composition in painting
- mix colours using basic colour theory
- use a range of painting techniques such as 'impasto', 'scumble' and 'glaze'
- identify the work of artists and other practitioners.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a course for beginners. Some drawing experience is helpful but not essential.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Practical work, individual and group tutoring, group discussion, demonstrations, visual presentations and handouts.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
All basic paints and brushes required for the course are provided.
You will need to bring with you the following materials:
1. A palette knife
2. Rags or kitchen roll
3. Old clothes

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Start painting naturally leads on to Painting 1, which prepares you for the technical approaches to painting.
For maximum benefit, we recommend you do both 'Painting 1' and 'Painting 2' or both modules in our Saturday school, 'Complete painting course part 1: beginners' followed by 'Complete painting course part 2: intermediate'.
There are a number of other next level painting courses that would be ideal progression routes from Start Painting, such as 'Ways into abstract painting', 'Painting and the creative imagination', 'Oil painting for beginners' or 'Painting from plants and flowers'.
Brian has taught painting and drawing for over 30 years in a variety of different places and at different levels. He graduated from the Slade School of Art in 1978 and has continued to practise painting ever since. He has had over 10 one-person shows in the UK and exhibited in Germany and the USA. Although still life has been a principle interest, he has completed a number of portraits and exhibited 3 times in the National Portrait Gallery and is often in the RA Summer Exhibition. Brian particularly likes to include knowledge of art historical contexts with practical work to extend students' methods and approaches. He aims to focus on painting from diverse periods and cultures to develop individual ideas. When teaching he hopes to encourage a liveliness of approach with a solid understanding of technical issues involved. This can, in his opinion, lead on to a more confident, personal approach.
