What is the course about?

Engaging with painting as a ‘live’ process. This course looks at how paintings being made from observation may be developed through careful analysis of the paint surface. By weighing up the strengths and weaknesses of the paint's application, the course proposes that strategic decisions can be made about how best to advance the image in terms of quality, intensity, velocity and scale of mark in addition to choice of technique and palette. Knowing how to read a paint surface will prompt surprising developments in your paintings and ultimately more wide ranging interpretations of your source material.

What will we cover?

- You will not be taught how to paint, but how to employ painting in response to a developing image.
- We will look at the importance of visual rhythm in decision-making and how dynamic composition (the organisation of mark-making) functions.
- We will look at how to set up a three-way dialogue between you, your painting and subject matter and how an ability to effectively read the paint surface is key to this.
- We will also look at how this dialogue impacts of your palette.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Objectively assess the performance of your painting's surface to identify pictorial need.
- Make strategic decisions about how to advance your painting based on this assessment in relation to mark, technique and palette.
- Apply an appreciation of visual rhythm and dynamic composition to your decicion-making.
- Work on several paintings concurrently and reach wide ranging stylistic interpretations of your subject.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

- Crits and group seminars will have an important role on this course.
- All projects are designed to be completed in class, although you may wish to continue in your own time.
