What is the course about?

Make use of natural and available light in photography. Gain skills in using exposure, light metering, white balance and camera settings to control lighting. Learn how to read and modify natural light using reflectors and diffusers. Experiment with available light in portraiture, landscape and product photography. Put your skills to practice through weekly tasks, participate in group discussions and get feedback.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Session 1: Introduction, reading natural light
Session 2: Exposure and light metering
Session 3: Light and colour, setting white balance
Session 4: Quality and direction of light
Session 5: Modifying and mixing different light sources.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Recognize different light sources and their qualities.
- Read and modify the quality, contrast and direction of available light.
- Use camera settings for correct exposure in low light conditions.
- Use the light metering modes of your camera effectively.
- Set and correct white balance for ambient and mixed lighting.
- Present a varied selection of images using only available light.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is ideal for those who have completed our 'Beginners Photography: Stage 1' course, or for anyone with a basic understanding of ISO, aperture, shutter speed, white balance and how to change these on your digital SLR or bridge camera. You will need to be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations and hand-outs. You will be invited to take part in group discussion on Zoom and upload images onto Google Classroom. You should be happy using numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations. All hand-outs and assignments will be posted on Google Classroom.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through presentations, demonstrations, practical exercises, online discussions, group critiques and hand-outs given out through Google classroom. You will be expected to photograph some images between the lessons and upload them to Google classroom for group discussions.
Learners will be expected to join and participate in activities posted on the shared Google Classroom. Full details of this will be provided on enrolment and a reminder email sent out 3 days before the course starts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

- You will need to have a digital camera, which has manual settings for aperture and shutter speed.
- A tripod will be useful but not essential for this class. Please note: This course is not suitable for photography on smart phones or fully automatic cameras.
- You will be taught using Zoom for the live sessions with your tutor. You will receive an email 2.5hrs before your session starts with details of the live session link. Please be aware you will need to check your email address associated with your account within this window.
- We use Google Classroom E-learning platform which will store all tasks/notes/resources/ demo videos You will need to login into our Google classroom before each sessions starts.
- You will need a computer or laptop. Ideally with a fully updated google Chrome browser.
- Using headphones with microphones will block out all room noise in sessions.
- If you are using a tablet or mobile device you will need a microphone, and optionally a camera.
- You will require a good broadband connection as mobile data 3G/4G or a mobile dongle will not provide sufficient Bandwidth for live sessions.

Laura is a photographer, picture editor and photography tutor. She holds an MA in art photograpy and has over ten years of editorial experience from a range of roles. Laura currently works as a freelance photographer and picture editor, specializing in portraiture, travel and documentary photography. Her passion is visual storytelling - making images work together to create a meaningful narrative. Before moving to London Laura worked as a university lecturer in Finland, teaching photojournalism. For the last five years Laura has taught digital photography, lighting, image editing and documentary storytelling to adults from all backgrounds and levels. Her style of teaching has been described as clear, inspiring and approachable. "I think holding a camera is a super power. It makes you see the world from a different angle and pay attention to the smallest details. Learning the technical aspects of photography is really important, but it can be done in a fun and creative way."
