What is the course about?

This intensive course focuses on the interpretation and performance of 'Fantasias' as distinct compositions. Fantasias evolved from their Renaissance origins as pieces stemming "solely from the fantasy and skill of the author who created" them (Luis de Milán), and thus their characteristics vary considerably.
We will explore through detailed analysis whether fantasias are indeed as ‘formless’ as their titles appear to suggest, emphasising the interpretative challenges that result from freedom of rhythm and tempo, omission of bar-lines, virtuosity, and adventurousness in harmony and modulation.
Please choose a piece/movement from the the repertoire list below, and prior to the course email your choice to the Music Department sothat the tutor knows what you are bringing.
