What is the course about?
In this course you will learn how to become more strong, steady and agile. You will learn how to improve strength, balance, flexibility, dynamic core stability, coordination, functional movement, postural stability in dynamic and static conditions, using mat based and standing exercises. Explore the dynamic relationship between the feet, pelvis, head and eyes to help orientate yourself better in space. Develop more awareness of the role the visual, vestibular and proceptive systems have on your ability to stay upright and in motion. You will also discover how to nourish your bones, and how to ease tension and stress and find greater comfort and vitality in everyday life.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.

What will we cover?
We will cover postural stability and control, static and dynamic balance, core stability, kinesthetic awareness , how to get up and down from the floor safely and efficiently, the visual, vestibular and proprioceptive systems, functional movements and strengthening exercises. We will also include some basic anatomy and bone health.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Perform weight bearing exercises to increase strength
- Recognise ways of walking more easily and efficiently
- Develop more bone health awareness
- Maintain better postural stability in standing and in motion.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Everyone is welcome, no previous knowledge or experience is needed. However you should be able to get down on
the floor and up again independently or with the support from a chair. This class is safe and suitable for those affected by osteoporosis, osteopenia and those concerned about their balance or falling. If you have a disability or health concern, please contact the Health and Lifestyle department in advance. You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions.
If you have any health concerns, or have been affected by any of the conditions listed below, please consult with
health practitioner whether it is appropriate for you to take part in an exercise or movement workshop, and bring a
referral letter from them to your tutor. You may need to get medical clearance (from the college or from your health
practitioner) first, and if you have not, or it is not appropriate, then please do not enrol in this movement workshop.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This course is experiential and taught at a slower pace based and combines demonstrations and verbally guided
instructions. The movements will be performed mindfully lying on the mat and in standing and there will be an
opportunity to use small equipment to tone or release tension. This class weaves together movements from Pilates,
Fascial Fitness, functional movements, strength and balance from the OTAGO exercise program, Mindfulness and the Feldenkrais Method. The tutor may give some short presentations on relevant topics, and suggestions for home
practice will be provided.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
The best thing to wear is comfortable and loose clothing.

Charoltte is a movement and mindfulness teacher with over 12 years of experience. She says 'Over 25 years I've explored different movement disciplines and therapies. Throughout the years, one particular method stood out from all the others, the Feldenkrais Method - a way of healing and learning through movement. It resonated with my aspirations for awareness, healing, learning and resilience. The people I teach are from all walks of life. I offer a variety of classes e.g Feldenkrais, Mindful Pilates and Pilates Bones & Balance and workshops in different settings from the NHS, adult education, the local community and corporate wellness. I also offer individual movement lessons and Feldenkrais hands-on Functional Integration. To maintain my own wellbeing, on-going learning and curiosity, I have a regular movement and mindfulness practice. I also swim and walk as well as receiving mentoring in the Feldenkrais method and Mindfulness.' Qualifications: Feldenkrais Practitioner, Pilates Foundation teacher, Postural Stability Instructor and Mindfulness for Stress and Health (Breathworks). BA Social Anthropology and Economics.
