What is the course about?
Explore portraiture through drawing and painting. Drawing can provide quick and accessible methods to look at elements like structure, likeness and mark-making. You will also further develop your skills in painting such as colour-mixing and building up a portrait in layers.
What will we cover?
Working form observation of a live model, you will develop your understanding and skills in relation to drawing and painting portraits. These include the use of proportion, colour as tone, how to convey structure, volume and expression. Looking at a variety of artist’s work you will also learn how different mark-making techniques can produce lively and expressive drawings and paintings.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Draw and paint the portrait head with improved accuracy.
- Understand better how to use colour as tone.
- Convey basic structure in the human head
- Use a variety of painting and drawing techniques for expressive effect.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for intermediate students or those with some previous experience such as having done Portraits 1 or life painting.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Talks, practical work, demonstrations, individual tutoring, group discussion.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
This course will equip you with the skills to develop your portrait work on courses such as For those wishing to develop a personal practice in figure and portraiture over a year, City Lit Year of Figure and Portrait is highly recommended. Ideal shorter courses would be : VH759 'Experimental approaches to portraiture', VH854 'Anatomical life and portrait drawing studio', VH892 'Anatomical life and portrait drawing studio' and VM632 Contemporary portraits.
Amanda Bracken started her teaching career at the Serpentine Gallery, researching, developing and delivering projects to a range of audiences, which illuminated the art work on show in the exhibition programme, including a teachers’ pack for the Bridget Riley exhibition. She also gained substantial experience developing projects and workshops within the education departments of The Drawing Room, the Estorick collection, The National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria Miro Gallery in particular Alice Neel: Portraits. Bracken holds an MA in Fine Art gained at Central Saint Martins. She also holds a BA in joint Art/Dance and a PGCE gained at Goldsmiths College London. Brackens paintings, drawings and installations have been selected for exhibitions in London and nationally including the Drawing Room, ASC Gallery, C and C Gallery and Atkinson Gallery Millfield. ‘I am interested in colour and form in all its permutations and the qualities of the substance of painting and drawing-the figurative, the abstract and the in-between. Citylit has a diverse Art department where I can use my experience to stimulate students to develop their own work'.
