What is the course about?
The course aims to give students basic knowledge of Portuguese, enabling them to understand how the language works and to start communicating in Portuguese in various situations. This course, together with module 1 and module 3 covers year one and two (Portuguese beginners and Portuguese 2 lower). Expect more homework than in other courses.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.

What will we cover?
Topics: work, shopping for food, shopping for clothes, physical descriptions, describing personality, at the doctor’s, likes and dislikes
Grammar: indirect pronouns lhe/lhes, adverbs of frequency, the comparative and superlative, recycling the possessive, past tense (perfeito e imperfeito).
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-shop for food
-describe symptoms at the doctor’s/the pharmacy
-describe someone’s physical appearance and personality
-talk about the past (holidays, the weekend, the past week…)
-describe habits in the past (childhood, routines, etc)
-buy a ticket and ask for info at a train station.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Students should have completed 'Portuguese rapidamente: module 1' or have an equivalent knowledge of the language.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of number for daily activities (e.g using money, telling the time, etc).
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
The course is based on the tutor's own materials but you might want to purchase a book for home study. Please ask the tutor.

Denise Suzzara Delf started teaching Italian and English as a foreign language in Brazil. She moved to the UK in 1993 where she has been living ever since. As she wanted to continue her career in teaching, she completed the TEFL and Modern Languages course at Westminster College in 1994. She then started teaching Portuguese as a foreign language in adult education colleges. Denise has also done some work for Westminster Council as a language assistant in secondary and primary schools and has prepared private students for GCSE and A-level Portuguese. Denise has 26 years’ teaching experience in the UK and currently teaches Portuguese courses from beginners to level 4 at the City Lit.
