What is the course about?

This is a beginners throwing course. This course is going to introduce basic techniques for throwing and turning
forms, surface decoration and glazing.

What will we cover?

The aim of this course is to teach basic throwing skills, as well as an understanding of form, balance and function.
It also covers decoration and glazing using slips and department glazes.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Make simple thrown forms
- Decorate the forms with different surface decoration techniques
- Glaze using department glazes
- Understand the firing process.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course would work with your particular level. For beginners It will introduce the basic throwing forms and for
those with some experience it will refine and develop the understanding of form/function/balance and proportion.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instruction, demonstration, hands out and health and safety
information, and will be invited to take part in a group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstration, slide show, sketch books and one to one tuition, you will have time on your own to practice repetition and develop consistency shapes and forms on the wheel. There will be group discussions as well as individual tuition.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You should bring an old towel and 10 plastic rubbish bags of 20 litres. Most ceramic materials are covered by the course fee. There is a charge of £2.50 per 500g for clay before firing, the porcelain charge is £20.00 per bag/ £10.00 per half bag. Tools are available within the department for use but you may want to purchase your own. Ensure that you bring with you a suitable pair of closed shoes, e.g. not open toed sandals.

Carina Ciscato

Carina Ciscato was born in Sao Paulo Brazil, in 1970. After graduating in Industrial Design in ’92 in Sao Paulo, she was introduced to Studio Pottery in Krefeld Germany where she spent 1 year working in the studio of Marietta Cremer. Upon return to Brazil she became apprentice to Lucia Ramenzoni, one of Sao Paulo’s leading potters. Following her 6 year apprenticeship and a number of courses in the US, Carina starts to show her work in local galleries and through museum shops. In 1999 Carina moved to London where she became an assistant in the studio of Julian Stair and Edmund de Waal. The move from Brazil to the UK and the change in culture and attitudes to ceramics has seen exciting new directions. Since 2003 Carina established her studio in Vanguard Court, South London where she still works to this present day. www.carinaciscato.co.uk
