Time: 18:00 - 21:00
Location: KS - Keeley Street
Course Code: VV438
Duration: 1 session
What is the course about?
Maintenance and upkeep of tools. Also the preparation of tools for use and the correct use of tools.
What will we cover?
- Preparation and finishing of steel
- Hardening and tempering of steel
- Preparation and sharpening of cutting tools
- Fitting handles.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Prepare and polish steel
- Fit a handle to either a file or engraver
- Sharpen an engraver or cutting tool.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is not suitable for complete beginners: you should have some basic experience of using files, hand tools and some polishing experience. If you have done some other kinds of metal fabrication other than jewellery, so much the better.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Through practical demonstrations both to the group and to individuals.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
It’s a short session but if you have tools that have been abused, we can use these as examples of how to make good. If you can bring a file and a handle or an engraver/spitzstick and handle that would be helpful.
For health and safety reason, please also bring your won apron and safety glasses.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
