What is the course about?
This course is based on the book “Russian through Art”, published by Routledge, and on the Internet material of the course book and other Internet sources.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.

What will we cover?
You will learn about the materials used by sculptors, get to know traditional Russian toys, learn about the monuments both of the Russian empire and of the Soviet period, as well as become acquainted with the names of well-known Russian sculptors.

- talk about the monuments of the Russian empire and of the monuments of the Soviet period
- develop your own language skills and abilities to talk about the art topics covered in the course.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Suitable if you have completed Russian at Level 3, or you are a confident learner at Level 3 or are studying Russian at Level 4 or above.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This course involves listening to and reading a lecture (available on-line), using video and audio files, discussions, there will be some task-based and project-based assignments.
Homework will be set every week, which students should be willing and able to do in order to benefit fully from the course.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
The students are required to buy the course book “Russian through Art” by Anna S. Kudyma and Olga E. Kagan, published by Routledge ISBN 9781138400276. The course book can be bought either on Amazon or in the European Bookshop, as well as on the UCLA site https://ccle.ucla.edu/course/view/russart. Internet resources will be given either in the book or by the tutor.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
The course will continue next term on the topic “Architecture and urban space”.
Eugeniya is a Russian teacher who lived most of her life in Moscow. She holds a degree in language teaching from Moscow State University as well as a PGCE. She has also trained to be a language teacher at City Lit. Eugeniya has taught Russian at all levels in a wide range of institutions including secondary schools, London universities and various language centres and agencies. She enjoys teaching adults who need Russian for travelling, communicating with friends or who would like to learn about Russian history, politics and literature. Her passions are languages, literature, art, and travelling.
