This course forms the second part of an accessible ‘beginners guide’ to Irish history and will help participants gain a general overview of the development of mid-Victorian Ireland from an island ruled by England to the creation of Northern Ireland and the Irish Free state in 1922.

What is the course about?
The history of Ireland from 1884 until War of Independence and the creation of Northern Ireland in 1922.
This is a live online course. You will need:

4. Sport: From the Foundation to the GAA to ‘Bloody Sunday’.
5. War: From the Great War to the Free State and the Creation of Northern Ireland.
6. Conclusion: How religion politics, education, sport and war forged notions of identity in Ireland.

Understand the pivotal role that religion has played in creating a sense of identity in Ireland.
Understand the narrative of the major political developments in Ireland from 1884 to 1922.
Understand the development of elite schools in Ireland in the 19th century and their role in creating future leaders in Irish politics,
Understand the ideology of athleticism and its significance in the development of Irish identity.
Understand the cultural and political significance of the development of cricket, rugby, football, and Gaelic games in Irish society,
Understand the difference between Unionism and Nationalism in the creation of the nation state,
Explain and understand why many nationalists both fought for and against Britain in the Great War,
Evaluate and assess the significance of the Easter Rising,
Understand the developments of the War of independence, the Treaty, and the creation of the Northern Ireland state.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is aimed at anyone with an interest in both the narrative and varying interpretations of Irish history from 1884-1922. There will be plenty of opportunities to discuss and explore different interpretations and competing realities of the same events.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
There will be opportunities for discussion and reflection and optional self-assessments.

Colm has been involved in education for 40 years and has extensive adult education experience. Currently an Associate Lecturer at Solent University in Southampton, he holds degrees from five universities including a PhD from Strathclyde and an MBA from Hull. He has published extensively on sport and education in internationally peer reviewed journals including an article on sport in Elite Irish Schools 1878-1914. He has also co-authored a book on the role of schoolteachers in the development of association football in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His latest book Sport and Irish Identity is due in 2022.
