What is the course about?

This course follows from and expands on Sanskrit Level 2 at City Lit. You will deepen your knowledge of Sanskrit grammar, expand your vocabulary and be exposed to original Sanskrit texts in registers agreed upon by the group.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Thorough revision of what was learned in Level 2 – sandhi, the present system (present, past, future & moods – imperative, optative) active, middle and passive voice; uncommon nominal declensions, verb conjugations, the gerundive & the present participle. We will continue to read the Katha Upanishad – starting with adhyaya (chapter) 2.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Construct, read and translate fairly complex sentences in all the moods of the present system. You will be able to analyse and translate Sanskrit shlokas from the epics and the Bhagavad Gita with lexical help.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course presumes language skill imparted at Level 2 at City Lit, or equivalent competency. For details, see Books 1 & 2 of the IGCSE Sanskrit syllabus (the links and pdf documents will be provided by the tutor on Google Classroom).
As the course is taught in English, please read the outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Classroom contact with interactions in both Sanskrit and English. This course will be taught online with resources and preparatory exercises being posted on Google Classroom. To fully benefit from the course, you should be prepared to commit at least 4-5 hours to homework.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A dedicated note book to capture class discussion. The Text book for this module is Devavanipraveshika by Robert Goldman (ISBN 9788120833753).

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can enrol for module 2, in which you will expand your vocabulary dramatically, learn complex grammatical forms, and be able to read prose passages appropriate to this level, as well as verses from the Bhagvad Gita and the Sanskrit epics.
