What is the course about?

Gender is a key pathway influencing the nature, scale and frequency of interpersonal violence, we are however often facing these risks in mixed gender situations and contexts, were we may be targeted as mixed gender pairs or groups and need effective solutions for us all.
This course will Explore psychological, physical and social techniques of personal safety and defence, body language, assertiveness, gender roles, vulnerabilities and much more. Build on your life skills and develop your confidence and personal power. Construct and practice a simple reliable toolkit of skills to prevent and protect from a wide range of violence. As far as possible, given time constraints, the teaching will be tailored and adapted to the expressed needs and concerns of the individual student. People of any age or fitness level are welcome, learning from others students expertise and life experience is a key benefit. This may interest partners, friends and colleagues who may feel at risk.

What will we cover?

This course consists of some discussion, sharing of experiences, scenario analysis, practical physical body work and role-play. You will explore expectations of how violence arises and train generating solutions to threatening situations The course will address how to feel and control the body, progressing on to maintaining this when threatened verbally or physically. Also how to manifest and project confidence, which is much easier if you are confident in your ability to cope physically, so time will also be spent addressing how to respond physically if necessary, including threats and attacks from a variety of directions, front, rear and when prone.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Demonstrate an awareness of your surroundings
- Create solutions to threat scenarios
- Adapt and use boundary skills to manage threat
- Communicate a difficult situation, involve others and get help
- Adapt and use personal safety skills to provide bystander assistance and encourage additional peer support to manage risks
- Perform a number of simple defensive techniques based on good use of the body
- Demonstrate escaping from simple common holds
- Perform successful strikes with sufficient accuracy and power
- Model effective boundaries and body use
- Demonstrate and target aggressor’s vulnerable areas.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No experience is necessary to join. Students of any fitness levels can join. Students with disabilities are very welcome. All genders welcome. You will need to be able to read and write short sentences, follow verbal instructions, observe and copy physical movements and use spatial awareness within a group.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The class will be led by the tutor who demonstrates and participates in some of the practical work. The participants will be doing active work. Through talks, [scenario analysis], discussion and practice students will develop a comfortable and efficient use of the body. Practical information and discussions to demystify issues on personal safety and defence will be held. As far as possible, given time constraints, the teaching will be tailored and adapted to the expressed needs and concerns of the individual student. The participants will be encouraged to share experiences if they wish to do so.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students should wear comfortable clothing and shoes. The tutor will suggest further reading and provide further training advice and suggestions.

Richard Chipping

Richard Chipping has been teaching Yang family style Tai Chi Chuan since 1981. Teaching for Master Chu King Hung, the third adopted son and disciple of Master Yang Sau Chung (eldest son of Yang Cheng Fu) from ‘81-‘96. Richard has also studied for shorter periods of time with Master Yang’s other two disciples, Ip Tai Tak and Chu Gin Soon. Richard also teaches and practices Baguazhang (Cheng and Yin lineages). He is CEO and senior trainer for a charity, the London Centre for Personal Safety (LCPS) providing best practice evidence based personal safety and self defence training mainly to the vulnerable, crime victims and survivor groups. He introduced the IMPACT self-defence full-force approach using mixed gender training teams with suited instructors and was the first such instructor in the UK. Richard’s been an advisor to local and national governments, the Home Office and Metropolitan Police Service on public safety, public protection, homicide and sexual violence; Chaired the Met’s Sapphire Sexual Violence IAG for five years, contributing for example to two National Rape reviews and the ACPO Guidance on Investigating Serious Sexual Offences.
