What is the course about?

Develop your effectiveness as a communicator on this fun but intensive Saturday afternoon course, delivered in the college. You'll learn powerful self- presentation techniques and life skills -chiefly aimed at business people but all are welcome. This course will be delivered face to face.

What will we cover?

We will explore the following topics through structured exercises, discussion, demonstration and practice:
- Vocal warm-up exercises and vocalisation: introducing concepts such as resonance and vocal placement
- Physical warm-up exercises and gentle stretches
- Posture exercises and breathing
- Clear pronunciation: tips and recommendations for you to try
- Introducing yourself and speaking to the group
- Gesture and body language when speaking.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Identify and understand the purpose of exercises to help you to use your voice to your best advantage in any situation.
Enhance your communication skills in business situations, when working under pressure.
Acquire lifetime techniques to ensure further development.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You need have no previous experience but a huge willingness to explore and accept that body language and vocal tone can give out messages you had not intended.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will include practical work individually, in pairs and as a group.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please wear loose clothing to facilitate physical and vocal exercises. You should have a notebook and pen.

Lloyd Wylde

Lloyd Wylde is a former actor and now Voice Coach trained at LAMDA and at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama. She has worked for the Education Department at the National Theatre, Historic Palaces, Wellcome Trust and Soho Theatre, at several drama schools, and for the Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as independent work. At City Lit she has taught Actor's Voice: beginners and improvers, Communicate with confidence through voice and body language, Self-presentation skills for business people (with Nikki Kelly), Use your voice assertively, and on the Foundation Drama and Acting Diploma courses. Having worked at City Lit since 2015, Lloyd enjoys the diverse range of students that come to City Lit keen to learn. She aims to help all students achieve their potential, find and harness the power of their voice, all within a safe and fun environment. Voice is in the body and is an expression of your personality and presence. Lloyd aims to help you find out what your strength is and help yourself counter the things that might get in the way. Come and play with your voice and see what you can discover.
