What is the course about?
Working from a commercial pattern, learn how to make a classic shirt. You will be guided step by step from taking
your measurements through choosing the right pattern size,cutting out the fabric and then sewing the shirt.
What will we cover?
How to use commercial patterns, how to lay fabric for cutting, information on selecting the right threads, needles,
etc.You’ll develop skills in professional sewing techniques: sewing and pressing darts, marking, sewing and cutting
buttonholes, pockets, sleeves, cuffs and collars. Pressing and finishing techniques will also be covered.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Sew seams
- Sew single and double (contour) darts
- Create buttonholes.
- Sew in a sleeve
- Prepare and attach a collar
- Sew a curved machine hem.
- Professional pressing and finishing.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You must be able to use a sewing machine to participate in this course.
It is suitable for beginners-plus and improvers (you should have at least basic sewing experience) and students from
previous City Lit sewing courses. This is an intermediate course in which you can further your sewing machine
skills and learn the sewing techniques used to create a shirt.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Through demonstrations, discussions, workshop practice, one to one instruction and guidance. Some tasks may
need to be undertaken at home in order to be completed. You will also have access to an e-learning on Google classroom where you can access handouts and course information. Access details will be provided prior to the start of the course.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You will need to bring approx. 2 metres of fabric to make your shirt.
This will be discussed in the first session so that you have it ready for week 2. Ideas for fabric include: cotton polycotton, muslin, cotton drill, satin, cheesecloth and linen.
Bring a notebook and pen to keep your notes in and a small folder or plastic sleeve for any hand outs.
All equipment is provided. Fabric for samples and practising etc will be supplied.
