What is the course about?
Develop your intermediate sewing skills with flexible guidance from an industry professional. You are encouraged to bring your own projects to work on them in class. Some ideas of projects to bring include garment alteration, complicated patterns to fit, cut and sew or, working with finer fabrics such as silk, chiffon to complete a garment.
What will we cover?
The tutor will discuss your idea with you and, advise on what you will need. This popular course has up to 12 students so please be aware that the tutor will divide their time accordingly. To complete your project, the Tutor will support you to create and manage a work plan to achieve your goals on this course.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Create an individual work plan for 4 sessions
• Determine your SMART goals for your project
• Develop a range of new skills in your chosen area
• Complete a project or aspect of a project to a professional standard.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for experienced sewers either from previous City Lit sewing courses or, an equivalent. You should be able to use a sewing machine confidently.
You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You will be encouraged to take short written notes for your own use and take part in group discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Through demonstrations, workshop practice and one to one support. Participation in group discussion is encouraged.
This course, is supported by Google Classroom as a Virtual Learning Environment. When you log on you will be able to access course material, presentations and handouts etc. and may be asked to complete learner progress records. Details of how you can access the classroom will be sent in advance. You can find help via the student help centre on the City Lit website.
Additional / extension tasks may be set for you to complete at home and outside of the course hours. Completion is encouraged to help you get the most out of the course. Where required your tutor will discuss these with you during each session.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Access to basic materials and resources are available as part of the course. Bring your own project, and any necessary items to complete it, such as fabric, zips, thread etc. Further advice on what you may need, can be discussed in the first session.
You also have access to basic ,materials and resources as part of the course.. Bring a notebook and pen to keep your notes in and a small folder or plastic sleeve for any hand-outs.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
City Lit offers a wide range of long and short courses in Fashion & Textiles from beginners to advanced, and for professional development. Introduction to Pattern cutting is a good progression course to help understand patterns and you can learn how to amend or change commercial patterns.
Rachel has BA degree in Fashion Design from the University of East London specialising in Womenswear, but has a keen interest children's and menswear. She currently works as a freelance pattern cutter with experience working in all areas of the industry from the high street brands like ASOS to the designer high end and Bridal. Whether its casual tees or evening gowns Rachel has done it all. Rachel enjoys sharing these skills with others and believes in more making and mending their own clothes and just finding a fun creative outlet through fashion.
