Sketching at the museum: Tate Modern

What is the course about?
An introduction to sketching in different areas of Tate Modern. Drawing will be explored in its broadest sense by
gathering information through image making, research and interpretation. Enjoy the challenge of expressing yourself
in fresh ways through a personal response to the collection and in discussion with the group.
Learn about artists’ working practices and inspirations by directed research through some of the Tate’s curated
displays including painting, sculpture, photography and digital art, installation and mixed-media.
Explore a range of approaches with a variety of drawing media, using experimental mark-making, light and shadow
and colour to interprete the works on display.
Meeting place in session 1 will be at the top of the ramp just inside the Turbine Hall entrance. You will then be given a plan for the day by the tutor.
The tutor will have your phone numbers in case they need to get in touch in an emergency.

What will I achieve?

- Make quick sketches of a range of artworks from observation
- Investigate different methods of drawing
- Interpret work in the collections through visual research
- Sketch with greater confidence in public space.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for you if you are a beginner or:
- You want to learn more about how to draw from museum collections
- You have not used a sketchbook before
- You need more confidence sketching in public space
- You’d like to explore different apparoaches to using a sketchbook.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will receive individual guidance with some demonstration and group discussion, to enable you to develop your
practical work in the sketchbook throughout the day.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You will need to bring an A5 or A4 size sketchbook preferably one that opens out flat. Drawing pencils eg HB 2B, 3B, 4B, eraser, pencil sharpener, coloured pencils and/or any other colour materials eg felt tips/pastel pencils etc Please note that scissors, craft knives and some permanent markers are prohibited in the gallery.

Charles is an artist, designer and theorist with over twenty-five years experience; initially as a freelance illustrator working for major publishers and magazines, and for two decades as Creative Director of an award-winning west-end design agency. Greatly experienced himself as an adult learner, he was an art and design graduate first in the 1980’s but then returned to university – whist working full-time – to gain a First Class degree in architecture followed by a Master’s (with distinction) in architectural theory. He now divides his time between printmaking, small architectural projects and since 2011 teaching a range of subjects at CityLit: including cultural history and theory to creative practitioners, interior design and drawing. He says: “Teaching is the most rewarding experience I have had in a long career in the world of art and design. There is really nothing to compare with the complete engagement of a group of learners in full spate!” Summer also finds Charles afloat, teaching sailing and racing his own small boat.
