What is the course about?
Building on their popular book, Radmila and Tom will take you from London into space through a range of topics that brings astronomy to the public. Expect to be informed and entertained!
Radmila Topalovic and Tom Kerss are urban astronomers based in Greenwich, both formerly of the Royal Observatory. In 2016, they co-authored the popular Collins Astronomy book Stargazing, and they have been collaborating to popularise astronomy together ever since. They have spoken at a wide variety of events and festivals, including Wilderness, Café Scientifique, Secret Garden Party, Secret Cinema and others. Rad and Tom are also media experts having appeared on BBC Horizon, CNN Inspirations, the Guardian’s Starwatch Column and many more programmes and articles.
Rad heads up Science & Engineering at Kaplan International College in London Bridge, having spent more than seven years at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich developing and delivering world-class education programmes. She holds a degree in Physics with Astrophysics and a PhD in Astrochemistry, and has taught physics, maths and astronomy for almost ten years. Her biggest passions are quantum physics and astrobiology.
Tom is a freelance astronomer, astrophotographer, writer and speaker. He formerly spent more than six years developing programmes, engaging the public and operating telescopes at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, and has recently signed a publishing deal with Atlantic to produce a groundbreaking book about the Zodiac and our relationship to the stars, scheduled for release early next year. Tom is also the creator and host of the weekly podcast Star Signs, which gives advice on what anyone can see in the night sky wherever they are.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.

What will we cover?
- Discover free apps that will help you to plan your own stargazing sessions and start your exploration of the bright stars and easy-to-spot constellations in any direction, even if you’re looking through your windows.
The Sky Tonight
- Explore what’s shining overhead right now, how can you find it and what are you really looking at? This segment covers the urban night sky, highlighting what can actually be seen and how to appreciate it despite the light-pollution.
- Learn how to capture photos of the stars, planets and more using the camera you keep in your pocket, and get advice on choosing and using binoculars and telescopes.

The lecture will be aimed at a general audience with no specific background knowledge.

There are no additional costs, but you would benefit from having a smart phone in addition to the laptop or tablet you use for the online session.
