What is the course about?
This course is about the key skills and knowledge needed for working with individuals with disabilities and learning difficulties. This includes working with young people and older people.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
You will explore the meanings of the terms disability and learning difficulties and consider issues closely linked with support. This includes an awareness of how the attitudes and beliefs of others affect individuals who have learning difficulties and disabilities. You will be introduced to themes of inclusion, human rights, advocacy, empowerment and active participation and consider communication in working with individuals.

Give examples of different learning difficulties and disabilities
Describe the different models of disability
Explain how active participation and empowerment can be supported for individuals with learning difficulties or disabilities.
Identify ways of adapting communication when communicating with individuals with learning difficulties or disabilities.
Give examples of key legislation protecting the rights of those with learning difficulties or disabilities.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a non-accredited introduction, no previous experience is necessary.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught in a variety of ways to suit different learning styles. There will be group discussion, presentations, role play and practical work. You may also have visitors or watch videos.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There are no additional costs, but you may wish to bring a pen and note pad.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
When you have finished you can apply for one of our level 1 or 2 courses including youth work, information advice and guidance or health and social care.
