What is the course about?

Learn a sequence of movements from the Yang family T'ai Chi Chuan long form and Chi Kung, exercises that will empower you to calm your emotions, relax your body and create a more peaceful state of mind. Refine and develop prior T'ai Chi Chuan practice.

This is the in-person version of this course. For the online version, please use the course code FTC01.

What will we cover?

T'ai Chi Chuan, Chi Kung, stretching, warming up exercises, therapeutic and martial application, meditation and philosophy.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Perform movements of the T'ai Chi Yang-style long form
• Demonstrate improved co-ordination and balance
• Perform warm-up exercises and some Chi Kung movements
• Experience a more relaxed state of mind and body
• Have a deeper and more accurate understanding of Yang style T’ai Chi Chuan, its principles, expression and practice.
• Apply T'ai chi principles and practice to daily life.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for those with some experience. You will need to be able to read and write short sentences, follow verbal i instructions, observe and copy physical movements and use spatial awareness within a group..

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations, verbal direction and explanation, correction, individual and group practice.Especially as a mixed level class, teaching will be focused on the individual student, appropriate to their background and level.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You should wear loose comfortable clothing. Certain books and videos will be recommended.Making your own notes is also recommended.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

T'ai Chi, Chi Kung or choose from a wide range of other movement courses from our programme.

Richard Chipping

Richard Chipping has been teaching Yang family style Tai Chi Chuan since 1981. Teaching for Master Chu King Hung, the third adopted son and disciple of Master Yang Sau Chung (eldest son of Yang Cheng Fu) from ‘81-‘96. Richard has also studied for shorter periods of time with Master Yang’s other two disciples, Ip Tai Tak and Chu Gin Soon. Richard also teaches and practices Baguazhang (Cheng and Yin lineages). He is CEO and senior trainer for a charity, the London Centre for Personal Safety (LCPS) providing best practice evidence based personal safety and self defence training mainly to the vulnerable, crime victims and survivor groups. He introduced the IMPACT self-defence full-force approach using mixed gender training teams with suited instructors and was the first such instructor in the UK. Richard’s been an advisor to local and national governments, the Home Office and Metropolitan Police Service on public safety, public protection, homicide and sexual violence; Chaired the Met’s Sapphire Sexual Violence IAG for five years, contributing for example to two National Rape reviews and the ACPO Guidance on Investigating Serious Sexual Offences.
