You will learn, practise and be able to perform all the basic steps of American tap dance. You will gain a basic understanding of rhythm and syncopation. You will also learn a fun routine which will feature the steps and moves you have learned.
What will we cover?
We will concentrate on learning and mastering the three basic steps - shuffle, tap-step and ball-change. We will learn a basic timestep and the basic American paddle-and-roll. We will look at tap styles and gain inspiration from watching videos of classic tap performances.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
Perform basic double and treble steps. Perform a simple time-step. Differentiate between different tempos and rhythms. Appreciate differences between English and American styles. Dance a simple tap routine.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is suitable for complete beginners. Some experience of dance (jazz/contemporary etc.) is useful but not essential.
A beginners' dance class isn’t just for newcomers. In any beginners' dance class there will be students from all types of backgrounds. We all have different learning techniques and paces. If your first class seems overwhelming and you can’t get it the first time, don’t worry: dance is heavily reliant on repetition so it will happen. We want you to learn and to have fun so just give it your best and keep coming back!
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to: • Follow spoken instructions • Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance. • Work within groups and pairs safely.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will learn through practical class work individually, in pairs and as a group. Teaching will include practical exercises, discussion, observation and supportive feedback to both individuals and the group. You may be required to practice your learning in pairs as well as a whole group. The class will take place in a well equipped, modern studio with music accompaniment. It is essential to be ready to start on time.
HEALTH CHECK You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.
As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
It is essential to have good shoes and Tap shoes are necessary for this class. Having the correct shoes can really improve your technique and give you a much better feeling for the style of dance. The Tap shoes should be fitted with tap plates using screw fittings (no rivets). There are specialist stockists in and around Covent Garden which can provide appropriate footwear. Clothing should be comfortable and loose.
