What is the course about?

Working in a positive atmosphere, we will select texts and exercises that are designed to challenge and stretch your acting potential and skills whilst utilising your uniqueness and what makes you - you. We will nurture an atmosphere of support as we strive to build confidence and detail in our acting work, gently bypassing the potential stress and emotional strain that acting challenges can sometimes bring.

Anyone who has ever suffered from anxiety, battled with depression, require contact adjustments or simply wants to work on texts and exercises in a relaxed atmosphere, or if you have been a little nervous about joining an acting class, will be fully supported by a specialist acting tutor.

We want to safeguard your wellbeing. Speak to your tutor immediately if you are at all uncomfortable in any of the exercises or scenes.

What will we cover?

• Working positively in a group
• Theatre games – building an ensemble
• Vocal and physical warm ups
• Acting/ Improvisation/ movement exercises
• Text work: analysing a scene, subtext
• Characterisation
• Scene work.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Work with confidence in a group setting
• Break down text
• Build character
• Improvise with greater confidence
• Perform a scene.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This class is for all levels of experience. Beginners are welcome.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Whole group, in pairs and individually.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Notebook and Pen is useful. A pencil with rubber for any script annotations. Please wear comfortable clothing.

Dan Skili Tutor Website

Dan graduated as a Dramatherapist from Central School of Speech and Drama in 2000 and has nearly 20 years of extensive experience working with people in various settings. He is employed by the London Borough of Sutton as a Dramatherapist for the Sutton Clinical Health Team and has worked there for over 14 years. As the placement manager, he also supervises Dramatherapy Roehampton University students. Dan has taught drama therapy at City Lit since 2011, and now also runs The Acting room: developing potential, which is ideal for anyone who may require a little more time, support and adjustment to engage in the acting process. Dan regularly facilitates and make use of Forum Theatre, Playback Theatre and Gabriel Roth‘s 5 Rhythms, and recently worked with women and men who experience domestic abuse, in the London Borough of Greenwich. Dan’s more recent work, since 2017, includes facilitating ongoing therapy and therapeutic discussion groups for men. Dan is a registered Clinical Supervisor and offer supervision to all professionals who work in the Health and Caring professions and his private practice is in London Bridge next to Borough Market [see]
