What is the course about?

Your voice is a means of assertive expression. It resonates how you think, feel, breathe and act, and is instrumental in shaping and directing the course of your life and career path. This workshop offers accessible and empowering mind-body techniques to deepen your awareness and connection to your voice. You will work with tools and resources that support your vocal freedom and stamina, and explore vocal exercises that enhance your confidence, impact and expressive range in day to day communication, as well as in more formal settings such as giving a dynamic presentation.

What will we cover?

Relaxation techniques & postural awareness for ease in vocal production
• - Breath release and centring exercises to gain a deeper ‘felt’ sense of your voice
• Working with rhythm and the power of the pause to develop status and impact
• Exercises in vocal tone and pitch range to create clarity of intention and emotional
• Effect on your audience
• Techniques to allay nerves when speaking to an audience.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Begin to release hidden tensions that can interfere with vocal production.
• Learn how to project a strong and flexible voice with ease
• Develop self-regulation techniques to harness nerves and speak comfortably
• Identify a range of expressive qualities to build rapport with your listener
• Deepen your mind-body connection to your voice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

All levels are welcome.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This course will be taught in the classroom; there may be work to prepare between the sessions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Participants should bring the opening paragraph from a chosen novel or piece of fiction to present in the first session. Please dress in a way that allows you to move about freely during the class.

Kate Montague

Kate is a richly experienced voice tutor, and somatic psychotherapist. She is an established visiting voice tutor at the City Lit. Kate has a Degree in Acting and a Masters in Voice Studies from London’s Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. She is an experienced actress with credits in theatre, television and film. Kate has honed her bespoke coaching practice in the corporate sector both in London and abroad. She regularly trains staff at all levels, and delivers executive level coaching for middle management and CEOs. She specialises in Personal Impact, Public Speaking, Presentation Skills, Voice and Speech coaching, and Accent Softening, tailoring courses to meet client needs while supporting the development of the individual’s unique gifts, strengths and communication style. As a psychotherapist Kate has the ability to work effectively with professionals who are challenged by constant change, performance stress, and the need for resilience and flexibility within their work place dynamics. Kate’s approach is highly intuitive while grounded in technique, passion and experience.
