What is the course about?

This is a basic introduction to laser cutting and its potential for various practical outcomes. We will use AdobeIllustrator on mac laptops to create or customise a simple template, which you will then send to cut on our Speedy 300 laser cutter. You will leave with at least one design of your own.

What will we cover?

- Basic drawing and image tracing techniques in Adobe Illustrator
- Designing and personalising
- Identifying correct power settings for cutting / etching papers
- Saving and checking digital files correctly for laser cutting.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

All learners:
- Use at least 2 tools in Adobe Illustrator
- Design and customize a simple design
- prepare a file for the laser cutting process

More experienced learners:
- create your own designs instead of working from a template
- play with different line thicknesses.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners. No previous experience necessary but you need to be confident using computers. If you are familiar with Adobe Illustrator, you can use the time to build on your basic knowledge.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, technical handouts will be provided You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please note; we will be working on iMacs/Macbooks.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is a short, punchy tutor lead workshop. Your will primarily work alone on your own file, with opportunity to share and discuss ideas with you peers throughout. There will be opportunity for discussion and idea sharing as the course progresses.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

• Your imagination, this workshop is an opportunity to explore!
• A USB stick with 8-16gb free storage to save files you make.
• A notebook, pen

If you have some experience, you may wish to bring a design saved onto your USB to work with.
If you wish to cut more than one item there will be a charge of £6 per item. Additional cuts may not be possible within the course duration. Information on how you can have more pieces cut after the course will be provided.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

If you have been bitten by the digital bug, then you may wish to continue your studies with Learn to Laser cut and Laser cutting for improvers. These are longer courses where you can explore possibilities between digital and contemporary crafts.

Suk Han Lee

Suk Han LEEs original print designs have been used by many international fashion brands and retailers such as Halston, Calvin Klein, Whistles, Reiss, KIN by John Lewis, ASOS and Sweaty Betty. She launched new print collections twice a year at Premiere Vision in Paris and worked closely with sales representatives in US and Australia over many years. One of her most recognisible prints in the UK was for a Whistles dress which was worn by Kim Sears while she was attending Andy Murray's winning match during the London Olympics. That particular dress sold out instantly that afternoon! Suk Han LEE graduated with an MA in Fashion Womenswear from the Royal College of Art. She set up her own design studio to pursue her passion not only in print design, but also to explore ideas in sustainable wellness projects.
