What is the course about?

A short taster in the learning experience of photography courses. You will be taken through the process of taking photographs on your, or a City Lit, digital camera using a tripod and the procedure for downloading the images to a computer (Apple mac). You will then open your images in software and perform simple edits. Finally you will be shown how to create prints on our exhibition quality Epson photo printers. Please note there will be limited time to go through the settings on your camera. Our beginners' photography courses are designed to teach you the camera functionality in detail.

What will I achieve?

- Download images onto a computer
- Import images into Photoshop
- Perform simple edits to a digital image
- Save images as jpeg files
- Print a photographic quality image.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This taster is for beginners to photography and digital image manipulation. The course is ideal for people returning to learning and who are considering a photography course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by tutor demonstrations, small group practical work, handouts, projected demonstrations of software interface, hands on computer work and individual support.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring a digital camera if you have one - you are welcome to borrow a City Lit camera during the hours of the course. You may also wish to bring a memory stick to take your images away with you.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

We have a vast selection of photography courses. If you are a beginner we recommend the Photography for beginners: stage 1 course which runs multiple times throughout the year. You will have the opportunity to discuss further courses with the tutor.

Matthew Ward Tutor Website

Matthew started teaching at the City Lit in 2005. He has worked in darkrooms, Av production, artwork reproduction, photography assisting, studio management and freelance commercial photography. He has shots cars for Chrysler, posters for the National Theatre and dolls for the Queen. To date he has been commissioned to illustrate over 150 books, shooting across the World. He has shot commercially on 10x8, 5x4, medium format, 35mm, DSLRs, digital backs, specialist panoramic cameras and the occasional shoe box (for pin-hole). Matthew has a degree in photography and a post graduate diploma in digital colour imaging.
