Typography is the keystone of good graphic design and can be used in a wide range of approaches to influence your artwork and design intentions. Designing and working with type will offer a practical opportunity to develop an in-depth appreciation of typography, learning its history, how type has been used in industry and in referecne to many world infleuntial deisgners. Learn how to effectively create, manipulate type, layout and embed type within your design work using the professional industry software Adobe Indesign and Adobe Illustrator.

What is the course about?

On this practical course you will be introduced to the exciting field of type design, exploring some of the challenges that typographers face. You will develop your appreciation for both functional and expressive letterforms and learn how to create type that communicates effectively. Through practical projects you will develop your skills in identifying, choosing and applying typefaces creatively and successfully.

What will we cover?

- Typography Basics: type classification
- Improving the readability of text with Adobe InDesign
- Creating type as shape with Adobe Illustrator
- Typographic manipulation techniques
- Modular type and typographic mark
- Black and white, space and non-space, form and counter-form
- The typographic grid
- The page, the text blocks and placing text.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Create, modify and manipulate the design of type to enhance design and readability
- Understand what makes good typographic design when applying digital design processes and techniques in creating and modifying typography.
- Create and use a range of textual and typographic elements effectively in a digital design format.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No experience in InDesign or Illustrator is necessary but a basic experience in Graphic Design would be an advantage. You are expected to have basic skills in using a computer and should be able to navigate, move and open files on your computer with ease.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching methods will include visual presentations, group discussion, computer demonstrations and practical work. Basic training in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign will be included in the course. You are encouraged to complete assignments outside the class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic material and equipment is included. Please however, bring a sketchbook of your choice to record your ideas and notes.
