What is the course about?
This is a chance to start exploring watercolour: have fun trying colour washes with expert guidance on some basic techniques, and the materials you need so that you can move forward to your next course.
What will we cover?
A series of guided studies will provide an opportunity to explore washes and colour, and gain some basic technical tips for watercolour, as you work from still-life and your imagination.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Use a basic wash technique
- Develop colour with layering
- Investigate at least 2 techniques used in watercolour painting.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This taster course is for beginners to watercolour.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Practical work in the studio, short demonstrations, examples or handouts, brief one-to-one tutoring and some group discussion.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Most materials are included. If you wish to use high quality watercolour paper, this may be purchased at cost from the tutor. Advice will be given about specific watercolour supplies.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
There are a number of suitable watercolour courses at city lit which would be a perfect way to progress your skills. The ideal progression courses from this one are 'Start watercolour,' and 'Introduction to watercolour'.
Anne-Marie studied Fine Art at Epsom School of Art & Design and Advanced Printmaking at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art & Design. She has been working with printmaking, drawing, watercolour and mixed media since 1976 and has been involved in art education since 1987 at City Lit College of Adult Education, Central Saint Martin’s School of Art & Design, Bath Spa University School of Art & Design, Norwich School of Art & Design, Havering college of Further & Higher Education, V & A Museum Education department (printmaking workshops,) Morley College of Adult Education. Anne-Marie has exhibited nationally including the Hayward Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts, Battersea Arts Centre and internationally at Brooklyn Art Library USA, RAMOMA (Museum of Modern Art Nairobi Kenya,). Publications: Mandy Bonnell & Stephen Mumberson ‘Printmaking on a Budget’; Jane Stobbard ‘Drawing Matters’; Jackie Newell & Dee Whittington ‘Monoprinting’ Teaching forms an integral part of Anne-Marie’s art practice with both often acting as a stimulus for the other.
