Duration: 5 sessions (over 6 weeks)
What is the course about?
Working from your own drawings, photographs or found images, you will be guided through use of washes and mark-making methods to develop an urban landscape painting in watercolour.
What will we cover?
The course will cover techniques for washes and mark-making; how to use contrasts of light/shade and colour effectively; and ways to create appropriate space/ distance in a composition.
You will look at various artists in the genre for inspiration.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Create a watercolour composition from sketches/ photos/ found images
- Apply appropriate techniques such as masking-out, mark-making to develop a painting
- Investigate layering methods to create tonal and colour contrast
- Start to develop and explore effects appropriate for your image.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
All levels but some previous watercolour and sketching experience recommended.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Studio-based and off site, through practical tasks, demonstrations, regular individual feedback from tutor, and some group / pair discussion, as appropriate; plus optional homework to develop.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please note that all basic materials are provided.
Please bring an A4 sketchbook - ideally flatbound, landscape format
If you have your own brushes please feel free to bring along.
