What is the course about?
This course will develop your CV, person specifications and covering letters so you know what to include, what to miss out, what type of language to use, how to structure them and how to make sure you avoid typical mistakes while getting yourself noticed, maximising your experience, skills and chances of impressing employers. The emphasis on this course will be very much on the content and language you should use.
What will we cover?
We will look at CV writing, person specifications and covering letters. Topics covered include:
• identifying what content should be in these types of applications
•matching your application to the job requirements
• how to present the information e.g. when to use prose or bullet points
• how to order the information to maintain the interest of the employer
• what type of language should be used
• how to make the employer take notice
• how to write to the point
• how to edit your writing.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• confidently write impacting CVs, person specifications and covering letters matched to the jobs you are applying for
• identify appropriate content for these different types of applications
•present the information to show yourself in the best way
• order the information to maintain the interest of the employer
• use language effectively to keep the attention of the employer and make them take notice of you
•write to the point and edit your writing so your text reads well.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for all those who want to improve their chances of finding work but who are unsure of how to approach CV writing, person specifications and covering letters. You might be looking for administration work, customer services or middle management posts.Your level of English should be at least level 1 or above (pre-GCSE). For those who need more general help with their English, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment. The tutor will help you discover rules and features of writing CVs, person specifications and covering lettes. You will work on your own and with other students on different tasks so you are always practising important in-demand work skills such as problem-solving, decision-making, prioritising, collaborating and independence. You will learn in a step by step manner. Your tutor will also work with you individually so you know how to improve and how to work in a way that improves your learning. You will need to do work outside the classroom and use Google Classroom to help you.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and a code for Google classroom so you can communicate with classmates and access materials, videos etc. online.
