What is the course about?

A practical online workshop for intermediate players - frontline and rhythm section, including percussionists, where you will learn to play within this rhythmic music form. We will listen to examples and harmonic analysis of classic Cuban and Salsa repertoire so you can learn how to improvise over typical chord progressions. Develop your music reading, improvising and rhythmic skills so that you can learn to play this music with confidence. Gain insight into how to solo over some Classic Cuban and Salsa styles.

Play Salsa, Son montuno, Mambo and Cha-cha-cha and learn about different rhythmic patterns which are played by the various instruments in a classic Cuban or Salsa ensemble.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Introduction to Salsa, Son montuno, Mambo, Cha-cha-cha, Bolero and more including their different styles and rhythms and learn how to identify them.
Play through a wide and varied repertoire of Salsa/Afro-Cuban Small Band charts
Learn to solo in this style of music with an emphasis on rhythmic and harmonic development and sight reading.
Learn about percussion used in Cuban music and Salsa and their associated rhythms.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

You will play through some well-known Salsa/Afro-Cuban repertoire arranged for the group.
You will be able to distinguish between Latin music styles including Son montuno, Mambo, and Cha-cha-cha and their associated rhythmic patterns.
You will learn various harmonic and rhythmic approaches to soloing in this style of music.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is designed for intermediate players at around ABRSM Grade 4 and higher with decent sight reading skills. Ideally you should have a minimum of four years regular playing experience to get the most out of this course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through online playing sessions where you will work on Salsa/Afro-Cuban band charts with
guidance from the tutor. You will meet approaches to sight reading, improvising and learning how to listen and play in a large ensemble in this style of music. You will be expected to practise the charts between sessions.
In class, you will either be accompanied by the tutor or you will play to backing tracks provided for practice.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Have your instrument to hand, and a notebook. All music and learning resources will be available in the Google classroom.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Afro Cuban ensemble runs twice a year. You may also be interested in other ensemble music courses and World music courses.
