What is the course about?
This course offers an introduction to Yoga practice for those new to Yoga and those who have some previous experience. Yoga increases body and breath awareness; it improves posture, stamina and flexibility, enhances our quality of breathing and teaches relaxation techniques which help reduce stress in our daily life. Attending a weekly Yoga class will improve your general health and well being. Arrive feeling tired and achy, leave refreshed, relaxed and energised.
What will we cover?
- Standing, sitting and lying down postures, including forward and back bends
- Inverted (upside-down) postures (optional)
- Breathing exercises
- Relaxation and visualisation.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Perform basic yoga postures and breathing exercises with guidance
- Increase your observation skills
- Follow the teacher's instructions and demonstrations

- Practise relaxation with guidance

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This class is generally suitable for complete beginners regardless of age, gender and fitness level. You will need to be able to follow verbal instructions, observe and copy physical movements and use spatial awareness within a group. If you have any health conditions which may impact on your participation please consult with your GP before booking and ensure that you disclose any conditions to your tutor at the start of the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Yoga equipment including mats will be provided. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring something to keep you warm during relaxation. Postures are performed barefoot but you may wear non-slip socks if you prefer.

You may like to repeat a Mixed level course or take an Intermediate level yoga course at City Lit.
Madlyn is an experienced yoga teacher and massage therapist who loves to share the joy and transformative power of yoga with with people of all ages and abilities. Having trained in Hatha and Perinatal Yoga, Madlyn now weaves together strength training, restorative movement, and stretching, in gentle sequences. Madlyn’s classes always include breathing exercises, meditation and deep relaxation. Her compassionate style of teaching encourages students to adapt the practice as needed, and to connect with their breath, move mindfully, and relax deeply. Madlyn teaches for organisations, yoga studios, and gyms, as well as teaching and massaging private clients, and leading yoga retreats. Madlyn is a dedicated mum to 2 kids, a dog and a cat, and is a disability advocate, supporting individuals with complex needs. Courses at City LIt include Mixed Level: Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Restorative Yoga, and online Light weights for everyday strength.
