What is the course about?

This course is for competent drummers who want to take their playing further and build confidence in your musical ability, in a supportive group environment.
Learn to play a wide variety of musical styles - Rock, World Music, Jazz, Reggae and Funk, with confidence and authenticity.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

- Contemporary rock, jazz, funk, and world music styles
- Maintaining a good practice routine
- Developing coordinated independence to enable a solid technique
- Improving stick control through a sound understanding and application of rudiments
- Tunes from the Rockschool grade 7 &8 syllabus
- Sight reading
- Recording ourselves.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Develop and sustain a practice regime
- apply rudimental technique to the drum set in a creative way
- Play a wide range of different styles with the correct 'feel'
- Play drum charts accurately
- Have improved 4-way independence
- play alone with confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For players who have already studied at this level, and drummers with equivalent technical competence e.g. play paradiddles at 80bpm, establish a groove for rock, Latin, funk and swing.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Learning as a group, playing your electronic or acoustic kit, playing together and solo presentations
Tutor demonstrations; recorded and youtube samples will support learning
Playing by ear, and using notation of various kinds
Learning grooves by ear and from notation
Students are encouraged to create a forum to share knowledge, using the google classroom
Please expect to dedicate time to practise between classes.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You'll need a full acoustic or electronic kit. Extensive learning resources will be available in the google classroom.

I am a fully qualifiied teacher (PGCE) and professional musician . I have taught for City Lit since 2008 and have also taught in Secondary school and private Music college. I also work on Jazz Summer schools and workshops in partnership with The Vortex Jazz Club I have played Drums with a wide range of artists such as Prince Buster, Annie Whitehead and Jason Rebello. I have also played a wide range of styles from Jazz to Ska and Rock and electronic music . I run the independent Jazz label Jazz Direct and have produced many albums, one of which, Max Roach Park was nominated for Jazz album of the year in South Africa. I've worked extensively in TV and radio and toured all over Europe including major festivals such as Glastonbury, and in South Africa I love Music and I love teaching and am currently enjoying exploring all the possibilities of online delivery of teaching. I have a home recording studio using Logic Pro and a location recording set up for concerts. I have set up my home studio to faciltate online learning I also love Art and have a BA in Fine Art and believe in the power of Music and Art to unlock creative potential and enrich peoples lives.
