Introduction to Digital Skills

At City Lit we offer a range of courses that will help you to:

  • improve your digital skills on your computers, smartphones or tablet devices
  • inrease your confidence, whether you are working from home or in an office
  • and help you to communicate more effectively with family and friends online

These introduction courses will provide you with a firm foundation across a range of digital skills including an overview of using a computer, being online, using your smartphone and remaining secure and safe.

After completing these courses, you can move to our accredited courses or more specialised Office programs.

All our courses are run by experienced and creative tutors who will ensure you learn at the right level and pace with all the support you need. We are here to help you become an active digital citizen.

The courses are FREE to most learners if you earn less than £21, 157.50 a year or are on JSA or ESA (WRAG). Essential Digital Skills for Work has no fee. They are either in the City Lit building or live online interactive classes. For online courses, you will need a computer with a microphone, a camera and the internet.   1. Becoming a MORE confident digital citizen: online and on your computer

    We live in an increasingly digitalised world where use of the computer and Internet have become the norm. This course follows on from our Becoming Confident course to enable you to become fully confident in your computer and Internet use. You will learn how to navigate around the internet in order to be a more informed digital citizen as well as learn about the Cloud and how to manage your files. You will also learn more about how to protect your data and digital security as well as how to take advantage of many free resources and use various websites so you can become a confident digital citizen able to navigate around your computer as well as the web.

  4. Becoming confident in file management on your PC

    Are you able to find the files you need on your PC or on your work's shared drive? Do you know how to search for missing files? Have you got a system to organise your work or home files? Files are the essential components of computer use and it is vital to manage them well especially as cloud use becomes more common. This course will help you understand more about files, become confident with the terminology and develop strategies for saving, organising, navigating and searching files of all types. You will also learn how to back up your files so you never lose them!

    Are you new to computers and the Internet? Do you need to increase your confidence with digital skills? Are you confused by Zoom? This course will ensure you have a solid foundation in using computers and being online. You will learn the essential features of creating, saving, storing different types of files and documents, including letters in Word and photos. You will develop your internet skills to find information quickly and efficiently, and learn how to transfer and then this information to different documents and files. You will also develop your ability to use Zoom to host meetings and communicate effectively online. Finally, you do all of this while learning how to remain safe online and to keep your files secure.

The days of attaching files, sending them, downloading them, working on them, saving them, re-attaching and re-sending them are almost over. Don't be like an email and get left behind! With cloud computing, we can share and collaborate on files either at the same time or separately without any downloading. Join this course and learn how to make the most of the cloud. What is it? How can it be used for home life and in business? What does it mean to share a file rather than email an attachment? You will focus on One Drive, how to share and collaborate on documents, keep track of changes, control access and editing rights and how to manage your files.
