Essential training for anyone wanting to apply to Drama school, Higher Education or to enrich their own practice. We currently offer two part-time accredited options at City Lit - 'Foundation (Drama)' at level 2 and 'Access to HE' at level 3. You will enjoy learning with expert tutors, participate in live performances and flexible class times. The tutors on our courses will focus on your development as an individual, whatever your background or age. These courses are perfect for working adults.

  1. Access to HE diploma (Drama)

    Accredited by OCN London, the Access course is an exciting and rigorous training in the core disciplines of acting. Studying part time over a year, you will be taught by industry professionals on a range of modules that will develop your skills in voice, movement and character work. This course is perfect if you are intending to enter full time training at Drama School or if you want to build your craft as an actor and hone your developing skills.

    Classes include the study of contemporary and classical texts, voice work, textual analysis and the exploration of the work of key acting practioners including Stanislavski and Laban. You will develop creatively through improvisation, physical theatre, devising, musical theatre, screen acting and audition technique. You will also have the opportunity to develop an innovative piece of theatre on a practical and independent project. In the final term, you will apply your skills in a public performance of a full scale production, with professional values, in the John Lyons Theatre.

    Previous students have progressed to a range of drama schools that include RADA, Royal Scottish, East 15, Mountview and Drama Studio. Others have pursued careers directly within the industry. PLEASE NOTE: Course dates and times can be subject to change, please contact the Drama department for details. There will be some additional dates beyond those advertised as you will be required to attend induction day and individual tutorial dates which you will be notified of in time to make arrangements to attend.

    The course fee is £3384. If you’re unable to pay this upfront, you can choose to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan from the Student Loans Company to help cover the course fee. The Advanced Learning Loan is written off on completion of a Higher Education degree course. A deposit of £340 is also payable to secure your place (refundable after you complete the course).   2. Foundation (Drama)

    Do you want to be an actor? This intensive, part-time (one day a week) course offers challenging Acting, Voice and Movement classes, which you can build around other commitments, with the opportunity to progress to more advanced levels. The course, which runs 29 weeks including Induction and final tutorials is designed to extend your skills in acting and its core disciplines as you work towards gaining a Level 2 Extended Certificate in Performing Arts awarded by Open College Network London. The course will cover the three main aspects of fundamental drama training: Acting, Voice and Movement skills. Ideally, you'll have completed at least one beginners' and one improvers' course in acting either at City Lit or elsewhere, or have comparable experience. You will be taught by qualified tutors with vocational experience. Regular attendance and punctuality is essential as a discipline of the professional theatre. Some work will be filmed as part of our assessment, verification and moderation processes. Please note that filming/recording of you is therefore crucial and recordings will be shared with OCN the accreditation board for this course. Your personal data will be used in accordance with our privacy policy and recordings will be held by the college for verification purposes until six months after the course has finished.   3. Acting: Grades 6-7 (Trinity)

    This course trains you to prepare for formal presentation of your acting skills (solo or in a pair) in classical and contemporary monologues / duologues and improvisation, and to discuss the context and meaning of your scenes.
