Advanced Craft & Design courses

This area of the Centre for Advanced Practice is home to our advanced courses in craft and 3D design specialisms. This rich mix of courses covers a wide range of creative methods across several disciplines, from traditional craft techniques and hand skills that are hundreds or even thousands of years old, to contemporary and/or experimental digitally assisted and manufacturing processes.

All our courses in the area of Advanced Craft and Design are taught by professional creative practitioners, with extensive experience in the spheres of commercial design and craft-based disciplines, many of whom enjoy international an reputation within their individual specialisms. All our Craft and Design courses culminate in a public exhibition.

With small group sizes, well-equipped workshops and an online learning environment supporting every course, there is a strong emphasis on group learning, engagement and debate, and on peer feedback and support. Alongside a solid grounding in historical and contemporary contexts, and a range of cultural references and perspectives, these courses offer the best possible environment and experience to develop your advanced creative practice.

    For learners experienced in a wide range of basketry techniques, this is a new course to build and develop your skills. You will be introduced to some new techniques and emphasis will be placed on self directed study and developing a personal portfolio of work. This course is suitable for those experienced in a wide range of basketry techniques and who have completed the City Lit basketry course or have equivalent skills.

    Take your textiles to another level with this stimulating two year advanced course. Open up new perspectives for your work as you explore a range of technical and visual research methods in response to a theme. These will include approaches to drawing, contextual studies, mixed media, dye and print, stitch and constructed textiles. You will be guided and supported throughout by regular tutorials and workshops that stretch your individual textile practice. The course will culminate in a public exhibition at the end of year two.
