Textile Dye & Print Courses in London

Come and join us on our dye and print courses and experience the immediacy and satisfaction of applying colour to cloth. We offer masterclasses in specific and experimental dye and print techniques such as natural dyeing, silk screen printing, printing with dyes… for learners wishing to leave with armfuls of samples. Our classes provide a comprehensive overview of processes from start to finish, leaving you with a thorough understanding of the technique and bundles of ideas for how to develop your ideas further.

Fully Health and Safety compliant, our tutors ensure your safety from the moment you step into the studio. Aprons, gloves, masks are all provided and small class sizes ensure our tutors can monitor individual progress.

Print and dye tutors at City Lit are all practising artists, makers and designers with highly specialist knowledge. Their professional experience of designing, making and exhibiting within their own practices will inspire you in every class, pushing you to realise your ambitions or helping you to discover your passion.

  1. Digital home textiles: make a statement cushion

    Add some distinction to your home interiors and design a statement digital print, which forms the basis for your own printed cushion. Suitable for students with a creative background and basic sewing skills. Photoshop experience would be beneficial but not essential.

  2. Learn to print digital textiles

    Using Floral design as the focus, learn how you can develop and print digitally printed textile designs on this introductory course. This course is taught in our digital lab at City Lit. Please note that we use macs and adobe creative cloud software on this course. Some experience in using IOS and Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop will be beneficial for this course.

  3. Textiles: block printing with lino

    On this course students will learn to translate initial drawings and mark-making into designs for lino-cut blocks. These blocks will be used to print dye onto fabric, making expressive patterns, exploring repeats and colour combinations.

  4. Textiles: silkscreen printing

    Explore silkscreen printing on fabric using paper stencils. Develop tactile printed, coloured overlays through using opaque and transparent colour and surface finishes such as foiling, flocking and relief effects specially for textiles.

  5. City Lit Mental Wealth Festival: flower printing

    Flower printing can be used in fabric or paper and it is also a very easy, fun and economicalway to extract pigments from flowers, transfer shapes and make patterns and textures from natural dyestuff. It is great for those interested in exploring natural dyeing and printing techniques in a sustainable way.This session is part of the 2023 Mental Wealth Festival hosted by City Lit and partners.

  6. City Lit Mental Wealth Festival: painting with natural inks

    In this workshop we will explore the beauty of natural inks on paper. We will playfully and mindfully submerge in fields of colour allowing time and natural chemical processes to do their magic. This workshop includes some breathwork, tapping and painting techniques as meditation. This session is part of the 2022 Mental Wealth Festival hosted by City Lit and partners.
