What is the course about?
Explore silkscreen printing on fabric using paper stencils. Develop tactile printed, coloured overlays through using opaque and transparent colour and surface finishes such as foiling, flocking and relief effects specially for textiles.
What will we cover?
- How to lay and prepare cloth for printing.
- Designing and making a paper stencil to print with.
- Designing a hand drawn artwork to make a thermofax screen (option)
- Mixing, printing and fixing colour using pigments and opaque, transparent and puff binders.
- Embellishing your work through foiling, or flocking.
- Good workshop practice.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Create your own fabric prints through overprinting using paper stencils
- Prepare your cloth for printing and fix your prints.
- Mix colour and use pigments, adhesives and binders.
- Add surface finishes such as foil, flock or puff
- Follow good health and safety practice.
- Use a bureau to make a thermofax screen (Option)
More advanced learners will be able to:
- Further develop skills, outcomes and refine ideas and techniques.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
No prior knowledge is necessary. This structured course is suitable for all levels from beginner to more advanced learners wanting to extend their skills.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through demonstration, group and individual tuition, discussion, illustration with samples, visual presentations and hands on practice. Techniques and processes used will be supported by handouts. You will receive guidance about collecting materials and researching ideas and some preparation will be suggested for you to work on outside of the class.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please bring:
• A sketchbook
• An overall and rubber gloves, and wear old clothes and shoes with a grip.
Basic materials are supplied but you will need to bring your own fabrics to suit personal preferences.
If you wish to send off to have a thermofax screen made, you will be shown how to do so and where you can purchase them from. Individual needs will be discussed in class.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You can further develop your skills and interest in design through a range of textile courses at the City Lit such as digital textile design, explore surface design techniques using the Laser cutter or 3D printer.
Experienced students may wish to apply for the go on to City Lit advanced textiles course. Details on how to apply will be shared soon.

Rosie James is a Textile Artist living and working in Kent, UK. She has a BA Hons Textiles degree from Surrey Institute of Art and Design and an MA in Textiles from Goldsmith College London. Rosie started off with a small business making dyed and screen printed fabrics, scarves, ties, cushions etc, but once she discovered that she could use the sewing machine to draw with, she found herself doing less printing and more stitching. She began creating larger and more one off pieces and brought back her screen printing skills to mix up stitch and print in large-scale illustrative pieces. People and crowds became her focus and particularly specific groups in particular places, such as art galleries or tourist spots. She gets in amongst them with her camera and then translates these photos into drawings and then stitches them using an old Bernina and black thread. Rosie has exhibited her work all over the world and has large-scale pieces in hotels and museums in the UK and the USA. Rosie has published a book called “Stitch Draw” which illustrates and demonstrates her techniques.
