What is the course about?
An introduction to burlesque performance, with practical exploration of techniques and styles. We will explore showgirl work, choreography, the art of tease and striptease, posture, poise, characterisation and style.
What will we cover?
We will learn about the history and modern revival of this empowering and expressive performance art form. We will learn the fundamentals of Burlesque posture, posing and dance movement, exploring different styles & characters.
We will consider the practical elements of burlesque costuming, hair and makeup. We will practice burlesque stage skills including stage presence, tease, costume manipulation and working with props.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Discover the variety of cultural influences which have shaped Burlesque’s history throughout the 20th century including the important figures in the history of Burlesque.
• Discover your personal freedom of expression through increased awareness of posture, style and movement.
• Demonstrate your stage presence, deportment and walking style.
• Handle various elements of costume with confidence.
• Perform playful, elegant and sophisticated routines.
• Recognise your ability to tantalise and tease.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Beginners - no particular skills required.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
In class you will work as a whole group, in small groups and individually.
HEALTH CHECK
You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.
As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You will need warm up kit - shorts and a vest top are ideal, also bring a bottle of water. You will need high heeled shoes that are easy to remove and that are comfortable to move and dance in. Hold up stockings are also an essential for most classes - get 15 or 20 denier as these are more robust.

Gwendoline Lamour (a.k.a. Nikki Hunt) is a performer and academic with over twenty years of university and drama school teaching experience for both UK and US based institutions including Mountview Academy of Dramatic Art, Rose Bruford College, London College of Fashion and Minnesota University, and has been teaching Burlesque at City Lit since 2015. As 'Gwendoline Lamour,' Nikki was at the vanguard of the UK burlesque movement and has performed high production value burlesque shows worldwide with clients including Elton John, Eddie Izzard, Cirque du Soliel, Matthew Williamson, Crown Prince of Dubai, Marquis of Bath and Jasper Conran. Nikki is presently in the second year of her PhD in Performance at Bristol University, specialising in the study of Restoration comedy.
