Discover how to return your body to its natural state of balance and poise in this beginner's guide to the Alexander Technique. Learn how to relieve stress by becoming mindful of muscular and mental tension.

This course will be delivered online. See the ‘What is the course about?’ section in course details for more information.

What is the course about?

This course is a general introduction to Alexander Technique, which is concerned with how a person uses themselves as a whole - mind and body - in everything they do. The technique can help you move and breathe with less effort, improve posture, be more focused and efficient, cope with stress better and be calmer and more confident. The Alexander Technique involves no specific exercises, requires no special equipment and can be practised wherever you are. It is suitable for people of all ages and levels of physical fitness.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

- How to become mindful of and how to use your body better during everyday activities, including sitting and standing, walking, lifting, bending, sitting at desks, lying down, speaking and breathing.
- Spatial awareness, balance, co-ordination, developing powers of observation and focusing.
- Anatomy and physiology where applicable.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Identify the Alexander principle that the way you use yourself influences how you function in everyday life
- Recognise at least two habitual patterns of posture and movement which may be causing excessive tension, aches and pains, shallow breathing, restricted movement or stiff joints.
- Recognise how applying the Alexander Technique can help eliminate tension habits that interfere with poised natural body alignment and overall functioning and well-being
- Practise the Alexander Technique in the classic semi-supine lying-down position.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous experience is necessary. The course is suitable for complete beginners in the Alexander Technique, as well as a refresher for people with previous experience, and as a compendium to one-to-one lessons. A basic understanding of English is required. You will need to be able to read short sentences and follow verbal instructions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The Alexander Technique is a practical method which involves the students participation through direct hands-on work from the teacher, self-observation and work in small groups and pairs involving interactive games and application of everyday activities. Students are videoed at the start and at the end of the course to demonstrate development (although student can opt-out of this if they wish). Some anatomy and physiology may be introduced where applicable through movement work and occasionally using anatomical teaching models. The tutor may also have volunteer teaching assistants for extra hands-on work. You will be expected to do some simple homework between classes.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no examinations, materials or extra costs. However, students are asked to wear loose comfortable clothing (trousers may be most suitable, especially for floor work). Suggested reading: Body learning by Michael Gelb; Use of the Self by F.M. Alexander: Alexander Technique in Everyday Activity by Seán Carey.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

As the Alexander Technique is usually taught on a one-to-one basis, you'll be given information on how to
continue learning. You may like to deepen your learning of the technique by enrolling for a further course at City Lit.

I found this Alexander Technique course to be a really helpful introduction to the subject. It explained the fundamentals and the history of the technique providing a solid basis for further exploration. The classes included a mixture of discussions, hands on activities and videos. It also gave us activities and reading to do at home.

A good grounding and taught in a relaxed style. I would be very interested in continuing in the current format for another term. It would be good to hone in now on everyday activities - i.e. picking up objects, getting dressed etc and how the Alexander technique could change/ challenge the way we do these things.

This course is a very good blend of practice and knowledge. An excellent teacher who gives his full and sincere attention to all his students. His teaching style is friendly yet very professional. At the end of the course, I could apply all my learning to my daily life. My awareness in addition to my posture improved a lot. I am practicing semi-supine position almost every day. It is grounding me and helping my concentration. I notice it's benefits more, particularly if you do it before a meeting or an important call. As I am someone spending a lot of time on the phone, I benefit a lot.

This course was invaluable to me as before it, my posture seemed to be getting worse rapidly, even though I was trying hard to correct it. By the end of the course, I had learnt enough to improve my posture. I now feel better, look younger and look slimmer. I keep The Alexander Technique in mind all the time.

A very good introduction to many aspects and, importantly the crucial Principle, of the Alexander Technique leaving one with a basic practice of lying on the back with all the subtleties involved. A good preparation for actual one to one lessons which are the main form of practice.

I attended the previous course and was pleasantly surprised by the improvement in my health and posture in just 6 weeks. With a small group there was a good group dynamic and I certainly intend to try and make the Technique part of my daily routine. If I have one criticism it is that there could be more hands on work and less theory.

The alexander technique has been key to helping me achieve general wellbeing, reduce stress and help me manage (in a sustainable way) my neck/back pain and rsi which osteopaths, masseurs, chiropractors have been unable to help me with.

I found the classes enjoyable and inspiring (both Brita and Kamal are wonderful teachers) and loved that I can now apply the skills I learnt during this course in my everyday. The ongoing benefits both for mind and body definitely makes the cost of the course worth it. Review by . / (Posted on 13/02/2015)
