A comprehensive introduction to drawing from observation in a studio environment. Learn how to depict form and space with accuracy, training your eye to become more sensitive to what you see. Suitable for beginners.

The RFSA Foundation helps widen access to art and design education by supporting learners facing financial, personal or practical barriers. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you may be able to apply for funding towards this course if you are looking to do it as part of the longer suite of courses eg 1, 2 and/or 3. Build your confidence tackling more personal, contemporary drawings in a lively series of project-based sessions. Drawing 3 poses questions about the nature and methods of image-making, supporting a more inventive and robust individual approach.

Explore the potential of light and shade, scale, and perspective to create space and depth in observational drawing. Learn how to achieve an illusion of depth by experimenting with different drawing mediums, and make a still life come alive through play of contrast and cast shadows.

Explore the practical and creative use of perspective through a series of lively exercises. This course introduces the basic principles used to visualise objects and spaces, as well as creative methods of using perspective to exploit depth and space in a drawing.

Look back at the drawing techniques and materials used by the Old Masters of the Renaissance period. Working to set exercises, explore drawing materials used by significant artists of this time using their methods to practise and develop your own drawing skills. The course includes making your own quil pen and working from a life model in the last session to apply those skills.
