Do you want to work on your English skills for the workplace and also focus on the types of skills all jobs need: problem-solving, negotiating, analysing, influencing, decision-making and working together?

These courses will help you become more confident and skilled in your workplace English so you can become better at your job or find other more rewarding work.

The courses are FREE to most learners if you earn less than £21, 157.50 a year or are on JSA or ESA (WRAG).  They are either in the City Lit building or live online interactive classes. For online courses, you will need a computer with a microphone, a camera and the internet.

    Do you want to work in business but lack the confidence? Do you already have a job but feel that your language skills are holding you back? This course will help you improve your business and work English so you can approach negotiations, meetings, presentations and workplace communication with confidence. You will focus on the skills that are most frequently called for in London job advertisements including: written and verbal communication, sales, influencing and negotiating, problem-solving and leadership.

  3. English for professionals: becoming fully proficient

    Are you a working in a professional setting and wanting to refine your English? Are you on a post-graduate course or completing a PhD and need some help to communicate at this level? This course will focus on some of the most challenging aspects of English proficiency in particular those areas of English for which there are no obvious rules or explanations. Why this word, not that? Why is this structure more appropriate than that one? We will look in particular at the effect of language, how it will be received and interpreted. This course is an excellent follow on from our C2 Proficiency course, but can also be done as a stand-alone course.

Do you want to show yourself that you have reached a high level of competency in your new language? Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) is an internationally recognised in-depth test of English language skill for people with ESOL Level 2 (C1) or above. This course will develop your language skills as well as prepare you for the test and enable you to communicate at a very high level of English either in the UK or abroad.     Are you working with the public – in a shop, at reception, on the phone? Are you a cleaner who needs to talk to members of the public? This course will help you communicate at work with customers, your colleagues and your manager. You will learn how to speak fluently and politely and use the vocabulary you need for work. You will practise how to help a customer or a client, make suggestions, give advice, begin and end a conversation, take messages over the phone, and talk about products.
