Do you want to work on your English skills for the workplace and also focus on the types of skills all jobs need: problem-solving, negotiating, analysing, influencing, decision-making and working together?

These courses will help you become more confident and skilled in your workplace English so you can become better at your job or find other more rewarding work.

Which course is right for me?

To make sure you book onto the right course we'll ask you to do a pre-course assessment. You can:

  • Take a online assessment - Choose a course from the list below and on the next page, click on ‘Start Assessment’.
  • Or book a face-to-face assessment - Contact us by email at universal.skills@citylit.ac.uk or call 020 7492 2511 for an appointment.

Face-to-face assessments take place every Wednesday evening between 6-8pm or at the following times:

Thursday 1 September 2022 - 1-3pm

Monday 5 September 2022 - 3-5pm

Monday 12 September 2022 - 12.30-2.30pm

Tuesday 13 September 2022 - 2-4pm

The courses are FREE to most learners if you earn less than £21,547.50 a year or are on Universal Credit, JSA or ESA (WRAG). They are either in the City Lit building or are live online interactive classes. For online courses, you will need a computer with a microphone, a camera and the internet.

  1. Business English for professionals: communicating, managing, selling (Level 2)

    Do you want to work in business but lack the confidence? Do you already have a job but feel that your language skills are holding you back? This course will help you improve your business and work English so you can approach negotiations, meetings, presentations and workplace communication with confidence. You will focus on the skills that are most frequently called for in London job advertisements including: written and verbal communication, sales, influencing and negotiating, problem-solving and leadership.

  2. English for professionals: C1 Advanced (Cambridge English Advanced, CAE)

    Do you need proof of your ability to use English to study at graduate level or to work in a professional environment? Do you want to show yourself that you have reached a high level of competency in your new language? Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) is an internationally recognised in-depth test of English language skill for people with ESOL Level 2 (C1) or above. This course will develop your language skills as well as prepare you for the test and enable you to communicate at a very high level of English either in the UK or abroad.   3. ESOL Communicating at work: letters, emails, memos, notes, meetings and presentations (level 1)

    Do you work in an office or on reception? Would you like to but lack the confidence? This course will help you with all the English skills you need to communicate well in an office both online and face-to-face. You will learn the right language for office emails both formal and informal, how to take notes during a meeting, how to answer the phone and take messages at the same time, how to talk in meetings and how to agree, disagree and put forward your ideas. You will also practise how to give a work presentation. You will develop other key work skills such as decision-making and working with other people.

  4. Communication skills: working with people (ESOL entry 3- level 1)

    Do you need to talk to members of the public at work - by phone, face-to-face, online? Do you have to understand your work colleagues? Does your supervisor send you emails you need to reply to? This course will help you become a good communicator at work mainly when speaking and listening but also when sending text messages and emails. You will practise how to interact and engage with customers, how to be polite, how to sell things, talk over the phone at call centres, take messages and talk at the same time, make small talk with work colleagues and write formal emails and polite text messages to your manager.

    Would you like to work in an office but not sure if your English or computing skills are good enough? Do you already work in an office but want to improve your administration skills?     Are you working with the public – in a shop, at reception, on the phone? Are you a cleaner who needs to talk to members of the public? This course will help you communicate at work with customers, your colleagues and your manager. You will learn how to speak fluently and politely and use the vocabulary you need for work. You will practise how to help a customer or a client, make suggestions, give advice, begin and end a conversation, take messages over the phone, and talk about products.

    Are you working in hospitality? Would you like to? Do you need to develop your English to help you do the job well? On this course you will focus on the language you need to work front of house across the hospitality sector whether this is in hotels, restaurants, events, or planes.
