What is the course about?

You will be introduced to polychromatic printing; a direct and hand-painted method of screen printing using dyes.
You will learn to create your own one-off prints with an opportunity to experiment in a relaxed atmosphere.

What will we cover?

Topics covered include: mixing dyes, hand painting with dyes, using simple paper stencils, mixing and painting with resists, screen printing with dyes, and creating multi-coloured prints onto fabric.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

As a beginner:
- Mix different coloured procion dyes
- Paint a design onto a silk screen
- Experiment with colour, resists and layering
- Produce a Polychromatic print onto fabric or paper
- Be aware of health and safety when working with dyes

As an advanced student:
• Experiment with various ways of using dyes/resists and screen-printing
• Produce a range of samples/prints on paper and fabric
• Develop personal ideas through Polychromatic print processes.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is aimed at beginner’s level, but would suit students with any amount of experience in printed or dyed textiles. No particular skills are needed to do this course.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is taught through practical demonstrations, with hand outs provided that explain the process. There will also be a selection of books available for you to look at.

The tutor will show examples of her work using polychromatic print and will be on hand to support students with suggestions and advise as well as feedback.
Students will be encouraged to use sketch books to record ideas in, to experiment with different ways of working and share ideas informally with others in the group.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials will be provided, but you may wish to bring some extra or specialist surfaces to print onto.
This might include watercolour papers and/or some cotton or linen fabrics.

General information and advice on courses at City Lit is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 14:00 then 16:00 – 18:00.

Renata Minoldo is an artist and educator exploring the physical and emotional body through textiles, sculpture and experiences with people. She has an academic training in Fashion and Visual Arts and hands on experience in the Fashion Industry working in London and New York. She is interested in alternative ways to approaching art education, aiming to stimulate an intuitive learning and focusing on the individual processes and needs. She works with a wide variety of people, from children in galleries and primary schools to teenagers and older adults in community centres, charities and public spaces.
