Are you able to find the files you need on your PC or on your work's shared drive? Do you know how to search for
missing files? Have you got a system to organise your work or home files? Files are the essential components of
computer use and it is vital to manage them well, especially as cloud use becomes more common. On this course you will learn how to navigate Windows 11, essential to good file management, as well as discover more about files, become confident with the terminology and develop strategies for saving, organising, navigating and searching files of all types. You will also learn how to back up your files so you never lose them!

What is the course about?

This course will equip you with the skills to become fully confident on how to save, manage, organise
and search for files on your PC, across a work network and the cloud. You will learn the key features of Windows 11 that make some of this possible. You will learn how to identify different file types and perform basic to advanced searches using the Microsoft Windows built-in search tools. You will learn the skills needed to better protect your information, personal details and files and keep them secure, including password protection, backup and restore commands. You will also become familiar with the main principles of cloud-based file management and use.

What will we cover?

• saving, organising and managing a variety of files and folders on your hard drive and the cloud
• identifying different file types and sizes
• performing effective and efficient searches from basic to advanced - including using file names, document content and wildcards (such as % and *)
• password protecting your files
• backing up and restoring your files
• identifying key features of the Windows 10 desktop environment and how to navigate it
• customising Windows 10 – for example by adding keyboard shortcuts and changing settings
• making the most of the ‘tiles’ system and the different apps
• pinning items to the start menu and taskbar.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for anyone who already has some basic familiarity with the computer and wants to improve these foundational skills to become fully confident in file use on your computer and in the workplace. It is ideal for those who have completed our Becoming Confident on your computer and online course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment with an emphasis on your discovering how to do and
complete tasks, with guidance from the tutor. You will work on your own and with other students on different
tasks so you are always practising important in-demand life and work skills such as problem-solving, decision-
making, prioritising, negotiating, collaborating and independence. You will learn in a step by step manner so you
can complete challenging tasks in enjoyable and relaxing ways. Your tutor will also work with you individually
so you know how to improve and how to work in a way that improves your learning. You will need to do work
outside the classroom and use Google Classroom to help you.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and a
code for Google classroom so you can communicate with classmates and access materials, videos etc. online.
