Journey into Spanish — from Machu Pichu to Barcelona, from La Mancha to Macondo ¡Vamos!

Of all the languages you could learn, why choose Spanish? Here are just a few of the many reasons:

1. Spanish is the world’s second biggest language

Hundreds of millions of people around the world speak Spanish

580 million people speak Spanish around the world and 483 million of these are native speakers. This makes Spanish the second most spoken language in the world and the world’s second mother tongue after Chinese Mandarin.

Not only is Spanish spoken by a huge proportion of the population, but Spanish speakers can also be found all around the world. It’s the official language of 20 countries.

Without leaving London you will have opportunities to meet Spanish speakers, either at your workplace, as co-workers or clients, or on your leisure and cultural activities.

Latin Americans now represent a significant part of the city’s total population. You could combine practicing your Spanish with learning to dance salsa, one of the most popular dances in the world, or any of the other Latin dances, in one of the many clubs in the capital.

2. Travel and cultural exchange

Spain is a popular travel destination

Learning Spanish could make it easier to travel and communicate in other countries. At a personal level, you are more likely to be welcomed warmly if you can speak to people in their own language. It shows that you have a deeper interest in their region.

Most Spanish speakers are in the Americas. There are more than 41 million Spanish-speakers in the United States. You could travel from the North all the way down to South America using Spanish.

Imagine the variety and contrast of customs, cuisine, music, scenery…

But you don’t need to go so far to practice your Spanish. You could be on one of the many sunny beaches of Spain in under three hours by plane.

3. Commerce and job opportunities

Proficiency in Spanish is a highly-desirable skill in business

Because of everything that has been mentioned above, Spanish has become a very useful language in the workplace.

According to the British Council report "Languages for the Future", the Spanish language is the most necessary foreign language in all fields.

Many UK companies are looking to sell their products and services to Spanish speaking countries, this makes Spanish a very desired skill.

In a globalized economy the demand for foreign languages is growing in the job market.

Spanish is the second most used language on the Internet, in social networks and on the official portals of international organizations, behind only English.

To be able to speak another language enables better communication with clients and colleagues and helps to work effectively with people from different cultures, which will give you an advantage when applying for a job.

Employees who speak multiple languages can participate in the global community in more ways, get information from more places, and learn more about people from other cultures. They are more competitive in the workplace.

Employers recognize that speaking another language can improve your problem-solving skills, increase your creativity, and enhance your cognitive ability.

Bonus: Cognitive benefits of learning other languages

Did you know that learning a new language can boost your brain power? Some of the proven benefits of learning a new language include improved cognitive functions and improved memory (long and short-term) functions in later life.
