What is the course about?

On this introductory course we will start by learning how to use measurements to plot and draft a classic dress
block. After completing this process, we will then use the block as a base to learn different into how the block can
be used to bring a design to life.You will understand how to adapt patterns for garment fitting and shape To finish the course, you will sew a calico toile of your chosen design.

For learners who have already completed this course you can try a more advanced top, build on your skills with working on collars and sleeves.

What will we cover?

Body measuring, sizing and ease, How to read patterns, the step-by-step process of block making.
We will then look at how a classic dress block works as a starting point for creating different dress patterns and to finish the course, you will turn a design into a pattern and sew a toile mock-up for a group feedback session.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Demonstrate understanding of how to take body measurements correctly
• Create a classic dress block pattern
• Understand basic pattern cutting symbols
• Be competent in using tools and equipment
• To learn how transfer a design into a pattern from the block
• Understand how to adapt the block to create different styles
• Cut and sew a design in toile (calico).

Experienced learners can;

• Work on a pattern with more difficulty working on collars, sleeve styles and/or detailing.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course so it is ideal for beginners. Some experience in clothes making will be beneficial.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-out, health and safety information. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
You will also be encouraged to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstrations, discussions, workshop practice, one to one instruction and guidance. You will also be invited to take part in group discussion. All work can be completed during the class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Access to basic materials and resources are available as part of this course. A notebook/sketchbook for drawing and recording of ideas would be useful.
You will also need a folder/ envelope to store your pattern work. Other materials may be required dependent on your design, the tutor can advise on what to buy if necessary.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This course naturally leads to Pattern cutting II where you can extend your skills further. We also run a selection of Fashion courses where you can also apply what you have learnt. Please browse the website for upcoming courses.

Rachel Selormey

Rachel has BA degree in Fashion Design from the University of East London specialising in Womenswear, but has a keen interest children's and menswear. She currently works as a freelance pattern cutter with experience working in all areas of the industry from the high street brands like ASOS to the designer high end and Bridal. Whether its casual tees or evening gowns Rachel has done it all. Rachel enjoys sharing these skills with others and believes in more making and mending their own clothes and just finding a fun creative outlet through fashion.
