FAQs - Languages at City Lit

  • What different language levels are taught?

For our main languages we offer courses from A1 level (beginners) to C2 level (advanced). In some languages we also offer consolidation courses to help students strengthen their skills before moving onto the next level. For other languages we offer fewer levels due to low demand.

  • How do I find out my language level?

Students can self-assess their level using this online self-assessment chart. This is mostly valid for European languages. We also offer the possibility to get advice from a language coordinator over the phone or via email about the most suitable level. We advise you to contact us by email first. Details of what is covered in the course and level needed is also available on the course outline.

  • Can I change course if I have chosen the wrong level?

Yes, it is possible to transfer to a lower or higher level within a reasonable timeframe. This can be done following the recommendation of the tutor or a coordinator. Please note that in some languages, higher levels might not be available.

  • When are the courses?

The City Lit school year is split into three terms starting in September, January, and March. Learn more about our term dates here. We offer a variety of start dates with new courses each term. Courses are split into modules with most modules starting in Term 1 (September/October) with other courses starting in Term 2 (January - April) and Term 3 (April - August). For example, we have courses for complete beginners starting in January and intensive courses starting half-way through term 2. The summer courses in July and August are ideal to start a new language or to consolidate your languages skills.

Depending on your level you might be able to join a module 2 or module 3 course without having taken the previous module. Please do not hesitate to contact us before enrolling if you want some advice.

We run daytime, evening and weekend courses in most languages.

  • Where are the courses held?

We offer online and in-person classroom-based courses. In-person courses take place in Central London, in our Keeley Street building located between Covent Garden and Holborn. Online courses take place via Zoom or Google Meet.

  • What do I need for an in-person course?

Each course may have its own requirements so please check the course outline for details of what you need to bring. Generally, you might be expected to use a digital platform (Google classroom) to access extra materials, videos and homework for example. Google classroom is accessible on PC, tablets and mobile phone. You may also have to buy a course book.

  • What do I need for an online course?

A good internet connection, basic digital skills and a device (preferably laptop or tablets) with a camera. You will also be expected to use our digital learning platform.  You may also have to buy a course book. Please check the course outline for more details.

  • Are online lessons recorded?

No, our online classes are not recorded except in exceptional circumstances. Nevertheless, students can catch up with any missed lesson by consulting the online learning platform.

  • How many students are in a class?

Online classes have maximum of 16 students. In person classes, can have up to 20 students depending on the classroom size. On average a typical class will have 10 to 12 students enrolled.

We also offer small group courses with up to 8 students.

  • Are language courses taught by native speakers?

Most of our courses are taught by native speakers. We aim to keep the same tutor for all 3 modules but in exceptional circumstances we might have to change the tutor.

  • Do you offer more specific courses than standard language courses?

Yes, in additional to our standard language learning curriculum, we offer courses that focus on developing specific skills such as conversational courses, reading, writing, debating, translating courses, and courses for advanced and native speakers. We also offer short courses in literature, history, music, and customs, for example.

In many languages, we recommend attending cultural or skill based one-day workshops. See our website for suggestions.

Some advanced courses will be delivered in the target language, please check the course description.
