Do you want to become more confident in your maths? Do you need to develop your maths skills for work and everyday life? This course will help you use maths to improve your daily life and enable you to
participate, make progress and express yourself whether at work or at home or when making sense of
information in the news such as data and statistics. At the same time you will study to gain a qualification: level 1 functional skills maths. This accreditation is the first step in showing employers and others that your maths skills are at a good level and that you can apply these to solving problems in a variety of contexts.
You MUST pass the first 6 weeks of the course. You must attend every class and do the necessary homework. If you do not, you will not be able to continue the course.

What is the course about?

This course will cover the areas required for you to succeed in the Maths Level 1 Functional Skills exam. You will develop your skills, and application of those skills, in working with numbers and the number system, with measures, shapes and space and in handling information and data.

What will we cover?

We will the topics needed for success on the Functional Skills Level 1 Maths exam. These include
• calculate with fractions, decimals, percentages and use ratios
• calculate with common measures including money, time, length, weight and capacity.
• Visualise, draw and describe 2-D and 3-D shapes and use properties of 2-D shapes in calculations.
• construct and interpret a range of statistical diagrams
• extract and interpret information from tables, diagrams, charts and graphs
• recognise and use the probability scale and interpret probabilities
• apply all of the above to real life problems in a variety of contexts.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• be ready to pass the accredited Maths Level 1 Functional Skills exam
• solve problems using fractions, decimals and percentages and ratios
• solve problems involving measures including money, time, length, weight and capacity.
• Visualise, draw and describe 2-D and 3-D shapes and use properties of 2-D shapes in calculations
• construct and interpret a range of statistical diagrams
• extract and interpret information from tables, diagrams, charts and graphs
• recognise and use the probability scale and interpret probabilities.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an accredited course. It is only for learners who do want to do a qualification.You need to come to class every week and have the time, means and dedication to work outside the classroom. You need to pass the first part of the course before moving to the accredited part. Those who do not yet have the required skills will be referred to our non-accredited courses
To do this course you need to have a good level of English, at least Level 1. See our ESOL and English provision if you need to work on your language.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment. The tutor will help you discover rules and features of maths. You will work on your own and with other students. You will learn in a step by step manner so you can complete challenging tasks in enjoyable and relaxing ways. Your tutor will also work with you individually so you know how to improve. You will need to do work outside the classroom and use Google Classroom to help you.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, ruler, pencil and calculator. You will also need lined A4 paper and a folder to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts, work on Google classroom and links to useful websites to enable you to extend and practice your learning outside class.
