What is the course about?

The wealth of literature in Latin from the early modern period.

What will we cover?

We will look at a range of passages from the fourteenth century through to the eighteenth. This will be a reading group, translating around the class, considering both the grammar and the broader literary and historical contexts. We shall be continuing our reading of the Life of Henry VII by Francis Bacon. The text is freely available on the Latin Library website. Details of the resources used in this course can be found here.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Feel confident navigating your way around the idioms of early modern texts
  • feel more confident with classical Latin for the Latin of this period is very classical (rather than medieval) in texture.
  • identify intertextual references
  • have a good sense of classical reception.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have studied Latin for about three years. As this course is taught in English, please read the outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

Neo-Latin: module 2

Mary Ruskin

Since my school days, I have been a huge fan of Latin in all its guises. I studied Classics at the University of Bristol, specializing in classical love elegy and Medieval sacred verse. I stayed in Bristol to take an MA in Medieval Studies; my dissertation was on the theology of Meister Eckhart. I then moved to London to pursue doctoral research on the Christian Father, Origen of Alexandria. Since then, I have loved teaching Latin to all ages and all abilities, indvidually or in groups. I have also worked at various specialist libraries (including the Institute of Classical Studies), as a freelance translator, a TV advisor and contributor to the Idler magazine. I also teach Classical and New Testament Greek, on zoom and IRL.
