What is the course about?

Collagraphs are easily made using a collage of textures and materials, to create line and tone in your prints. The course will look at making traditional collagraphs as well as a quick simple method of relief printing which can be done quickly and easily. Explore ways of printing your collagraphs on a traditional printing press.

What will we cover?

Collagraphs are a simple form of printmaking using a collage of textures such as wallpaper, fabric, threads, sandpaper or any low relief materials which are glued onto a cardboard base creating line and tone in your prints. The course will look at making traditional collagraphs as well as a quick simple method of relief printing which can be done quickly and easily. Explore ways of printing your collagraphs on a traditional printing press in monochrome and colour.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- make a simple relief print
- design and make a collagraph
- print a collagraph using intaglio and relief printing methods
- Use the print room equipment safely and effectively.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for all levels. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstrations, handouts and practical assignments, individual tutoring and group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials will be provided. It is useful to bring sketches, photographs or other visual resources as a starting point.
