What is the course about?

This course aims to introduce you to the basic aspects of this Slavic language and to enable you to take part in simple conversations. You'll learn the necessary vocabulary and grammar for basic communication, and you'll lay the groundwork for future learning.

- Alphabet & Pronunciation: De-code the Cyrillic alphabet and discover the sounds of Russian
- Basic Vocabulary: Build a strong foundation with essential words and phrases
- Grammar Fundamentals: Understand the structure of Russian sentences
- Conversational Skills: Practise speaking and listening in everyday situations
- Cultural Insights: Gain an insight into traditions and customs of the Russian-speaking world

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone can be used if you don't have a computer but please note the experience may be less optimal.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.

What will we cover?

Ruslan 1, chapters 1-3

Topics: greetings, introductions (name, profession, nationality), family.

Cultural insights: the cities of St Petersburg and Moscow, Russian names, Russian-language poets and writers.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Introduce yourself in Russian
- Hold a basic conversation, asking for and exchanging basic personal information
- Talk about family and friends
- Read simple texts about the here-and-now

Learners will start discovering basic aspects of Russian grammar and will prepare for future self-guided and class study of the language.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for complete beginners - no previous knowledge of Russian required.

You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of number for daily activities (e.g using money, telling the time, etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. We try to use as much simple Russian during the class as possible to build up your speaking confidence. Your tutor will use English when necessary.

Typical class activities will include practising with your fellow students, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material. Homework is recommended to consolidate learning.
